Empathy is understanding the experience of the feelings and thoughts of another person. Sympathy is feeling sad for somebody because of their situation. In the Yale Milgram experiment they had the test subjects shock an actor and the electrical engineer would not continue with the experiment because he understood what electrical shocks can do to somebody.
Empathy is a key aspect of understanding history. Understanding every single viewpoint will make it easier to put all the pieces of the historical puzzle together, thus enriching your knowledge of history
